Historic Farmhouse Renovation

After renovation and addition

Original house

Great room

Kitchen

Set within the quiet openness of the countryside, this renovation and addition reinterprets a 100-year-old farmhouse with a balance of historic reverence and modern clarity. The design begins by listening closely to the existing structure—its proportions, its vernacular rhythms, its weathered memory of time and seasons. Rather than overwrite that history, the project treats the original home as an anchor, allowing new architecture to unfold gently from its edges.

The rear addition is conceived as a contemporary extension of rural life: open, airy, and connected to light. Its post-frame construction expresses a modern agricultural honesty, while broad windows frame shifting views of pasture, woods, and sky. Inside, a mezzanine overlooks a great room shaped for gathering, movement, and the long sightlines that only country living can offer. Beneath it, the dining area tucks into a sheltered nook, creating spaces that expand and contract with daily rhythms.

The interior transformation embraces the warmth of modern farmhouse design—the tactile presence of wood, the softness of neutral palettes, and the simplicity of hand-crafted materials. Beamed ceilings, shiplap textures, and clean-lined cabinetry combine old and new into a single, continuous narrative. The renovated kitchen becomes the heart of the home, where light settles across its surfaces much like it does across the surrounding fields: gently, generously, and always in motion.

Overall, the project is less an act of modernization than a careful weaving. It binds the character of a century-old farmhouse to the clarity and comfort of contemporary living, creating a home that feels both deeply rooted and unmistakably renewed—one that stands comfortably in its landscape and invites the next hundred years with quiet confidence.
